5-Day Desert tour from Essaouira Itinerary

    Day 1: Essaouira – Marrakech

On the first day of our five-day journey, we leave Essaouira and drive towards Marrakech, one of Morocco’s most famous tourist destinations. Upon arrival, a professional local guide will welcome you and take you on a walking tour through the old Medina, where many of the city’s main attractions are located.

First, we visit the Koutoubia Mosque and admire its beautiful 12th-century minaret, the tallest in Marrakech. Meanwhile, your guide will explain the history and cultural importance of this remarkable landmark. Afterwards, we continue to the lively Jemaa El-Fna Square, the heart of the city. Here, you will see street performers, musicians, storytellers, snake charmers, and numerous food stalls, creating a colourful and energetic atmosphere.

Next, we continue through the narrow streets of the Medina to visit the historic Ben Youssef Madrasa, which was once an important Islamic school. We then explore the Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace, both of which are known for their impressive architecture and beautiful decorations.

Later in the afternoon, we drive through the modern part of Marrakech to visit the peaceful Majorelle Garden. Finally, at the end of the tour, we drop you off at your hotel or riad. The evening is free, and we highly recommend returning to Jemaa El-Fna after sunset, when the square becomes even more vibrant and authentic.

Day 2: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Gorges

After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and begin our journey towards the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we travel through the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which reaches an altitude of 2,260 metres. At the top of the pass, we will stop to admire the breathtaking mountain views and take some memorable photographs.

Next, we continue to Ait Benhaddou, the most famous fortified village in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the past, it was an important stopping point for camel caravans travelling across the desert. Today, however, it is also well known as a filming location for international movies and television series, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. During our visit, we will walk through the village and climb to the top to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Afterwards, we travel to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa”. If you are interested, you can visit the famous Atlas Film Studios. We then continue through the peaceful Skoura Oasis and the beautiful Rose Valley. Finally, we arrive at Dades Gorges, where we spend the night.

Day 3: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga – Camel Trek & Desert Camp

After breakfast, we continue our journey towards the Sahara Desert. Along the way, we travel along the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” passing traditional Amazigh villages, historic buildings, and beautiful natural landscapes.

Our first main stop is Tinghir, where we visit the spectacular Todra Gorges. Here, towering red and yellow canyon walls rise above a small river, creating one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Morocco. You will have time to walk through the gorge, take photographs, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Afterwards, we continue to Erfoud, a town well known for its fossils. If you are interested, we can stop at a local workshop to see how fossils are carefully transformed into decorative items and household products.

Later in the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of the Sahara begin. From there, you will ride a camel across the dunes towards your desert camp. Along the way, we will stop at a high dune to admire a magical sunset over the Sahara.

Upon arrival at the camp, you will settle into your private tent before enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner. Afterwards, we gather around the campfire to listen to Amazigh drum music. Finally, you can climb the nearby dunes and admire the stars in the peaceful desert sky.

    Day 4: Merzouga Desert Discovery

We recommend waking up early to watch the beautiful sunrise over the dunes. Afterwards, you will enjoy breakfast before beginning a relaxed day exploring the Merzouga desert and its surrounding attractions.

To begin, you can choose to ride camels again or start the day directly with our 4×4 desert excursion. We then drive off-road across the dunes and through the volcanic landscapes of the black desert.

Next, we visit local Amazigh nomad families who still live in traditional tents. During the visit, you will have the opportunity to meet them, learn about their daily life, and perhaps share a cup of tea with the family.

Afterwards, we visit the old mines of Mifiss to learn more about the minerals once extracted from this area. From there, we continue to Khamlia village, where you will enjoy traditional Gnawa music and spiritual dances. If you wish, you can also have lunch in the village and try the famous Berber pizza.

Later in the afternoon, we visit the oasis of Hassi Labied before returning to your hotel. Finally, the evening is free to relax by the pool or enjoy an optional activity, such as quad biking across the dunes.

Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes

On the final day, we leave Merzouga and travel north towards Fes, Morocco’s cultural capital. Our first stop is Rissani, a historic trading town known for its large traditional market. If we visit on a market day—Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday—you will see local people arriving from nearby villages to buy and sell a wide variety of goods.

Afterwards, we travel through the beautiful Ziz Valley, which is filled with thousands of palm trees. Following a short panoramic stop for photographs, we continue through Midelt and across the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains.

Next, we stop at the cedar forest, where you may see the friendly Barbary macaques living among the trees. We then continue to Ifrane, commonly known as “Little Switzerland” because of its European-style architecture, green spaces, and clean streets. Here, you will have some free time for a short walk around the town.

Finally, in the afternoon, we arrive in Fes and drop you off at your accommodation. This marks the end of our unforgettable 5-day Essaouira-to-Fes Desert Tour.
