Today, we travel into the Rif Mountains, passing through Tetouan, a city with Spanish-style buildings, and small villages where the Jbala people live. Following the winding mountain roads, we reach Chefchaouen, the famous “Blue Pearl.” The rest of the day is free to wander its narrow streets, explore the shops, and enjoy the peaceful feeling of the main square.
Get ready for a day full of history as we head to Fez. First, we visit the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, where you can walk among old ruins and beautiful mosaics. Next, we stop in the imperial city of Meknes to see its big gates and strong walls built by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Finally, we arrive in Fez, the heart of Morocco’s culture and traditions.
Today, we travel south across the Middle Atlas Mountains. We pass through large cedar forests, where Barbary macaques often appear, and then cross wide-open plains. After a short stop in Midelt, we reach the Ziz Valley, filled with green palm trees in the dry landscape. In Merzouga, camels will take you across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi to watch the sunset and spend the night at a traditional/luxury Berber camp.
After breakfast, we drive to Rissani, an old market town that was once important for desert trade. Next, we visit the stunning Todra Gorges, where you can walk between the tall canyon walls shaped by the river. We finish the day in the beautiful Dades Valley, staying overnight in a cozy local riad.
Your journey continues along the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” toward Marrakech. The main stop of the day is the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortress known from many movies. After enjoying lunch with a view of the kasbah, you’ll drive over the High Atlas Mountains. The route through the Tizi n’Tichka pass offers amazing views before you reach the lively city of Marrakech.
Pack light, comfortable clothing, a warm jacket (nights can be cold), sunscreen, sunglasses, a scarf for sand protection, and sturdy shoes. A camera is a must for capturing the stunning landscapes!
