Are you in Essaouira and dreaming of a desert adventure in Morocco? We have the perfect trip for you. This 5-day tour starts in Essaouira and finishes in Fes, taking you through some of the country’s most beautiful and exciting places.
During the journey, you will visit Marrakech, where you can explore the old medina and discover its most famous sites with a local guide. You will also cross the Atlas Mountains, pass through traditional Berber villages, and visit historic kasbahs such as Ait Benhaddou.
As you continue east, you will head toward the Sahara Desert, where you can enjoy a camel ride and spend a magical night camping under the stars. At the end of the tour, you will travel north to Fes, driving through the stunning Ziz Valley, the charming town of Ifrane, and the peaceful cedar forest.
This trip is a wonderful way to see different sides of Morocco in just a few days.
On the first day of our 5-day journey, we leave Essaouira and drive to Marrakech, Morocco’s most famous tourist city. When we arrive, a professional local guide will welcome us and take us on a walking tour through the old city (Medina), where most of the main attractions are located.
We begin with the Koutoubia Mosque and its beautiful minaret, the tallest in Marrakech, built in the 12th century. Your guide will explain its history and importance. After that, we walk to the lively Jemaa El-Fna Square, the heart of the city. Here you will see street performers, musicians, storytellers, snake charmers, and many food stalls. It is a colorful and energetic place full of life.
As we continue through the narrow streets of the Medina, we visit the historic Ben Youssef Madrasa, once an important Islamic school. We also explore the Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace, both famous for their beautiful architecture and decorations.
Later, we drive through the modern part of Marrakech to visit the peaceful Majorelle Garden. At the end of the day, we drop you off at your hotel or riad. The evening is free, and we highly recommend visiting Jemaa El-Fna again at night when it becomes even more vibrant and authentic.
After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and head toward the High Atlas Mountains. We drive through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road in North Africa at 2,260 meters. We will stop at the top to enjoy the breathtaking mountain views and take photos.
Next, we visit Ait Benhaddou, the most famous kasbah in Morocco. A kasbah is a fortified village, and this one is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the past, it was an important stop for camel caravans traveling across the desert. Today, it is also known as a filming location for movies and series such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. We will walk inside and climb to the top for a panoramic view.
Afterward, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa.” If you wish, you can visit the Atlas Film Studios. We then drive through the Skoura Oasis and the Rose Valley before arriving in Dades Gorges, where we spend the night.
After breakfast, we continue our journey toward the Sahara Desert. We travel along the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” passing traditional Berber villages and beautiful landscapes.
We stop in Tinghir to visit the spectacular Todra Gorges. Here, tall red and yellow canyon walls rise high above a small river. You will have time to walk inside the gorge and enjoy the scenery.
Next, we drive to Erfoud, a town known for fossils. If you are interested, we can visit a local workshop to see how fossil products are made.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of the Sahara begin. You will ride camels across the dunes to reach your desert camp. On the way, we stop to enjoy a magical sunset over the sand.
At the camp, you will settle into your private tent and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner. In the evening, we gather around the fire to listen to Berber drum music. Later, you can climb the dunes to watch the stars in the quiet desert sky.
We recommend waking up early to see the beautiful sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, today is a relaxed day to explore the desert area.
You can choose to ride camels again or start directly with our 4×4 desert excursion. We drive off-road across the dunes and the black desert.
We visit local Berber nomad families who still live in traditional tents. You will have the chance to meet them, learn about their daily life, and maybe share a cup of tea.
We also visit the old mines of Mifiss to learn about local minerals. Then we continue to Khamlia village, where you will enjoy traditional Gnawa music and spiritual dances. If you like, you can have lunch there and try the famous Berber pizza.
We finish the day by visiting the oasis of Hassi Labied before returning to your hotel. The evening is free to relax by the pool or try activities like quad biking.
On the final day, we travel north toward Fes, Morocco’s cultural capital. Along the way, we stop in Rissani, a historic trading town known for its large traditional market. If we visit on market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), you will see local people coming from nearby villages to buy and sell goods.
We then drive through the beautiful Ziz Valley, filled with thousands of palm trees. After a short break for photos, we continue through Midelt and the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Next, we stop at the cedar forest, where you can see the friendly Barbary macaque monkeys. After that, we visit Ifrane, known as “Little Switzerland” because of its European-style architecture and clean streets. You will have free time for a short walk.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Fes, where we drop you off at your accommodation. This marks the end of our unforgettable 5-day journey from Essaouira to Fes.
